A Life for Rhythm and Sound About Stephan Maass Born in 1967 in Bad Homburg and raised in Bavaria, Stephan Maass spent two defining decades in Vienna before returning to Bavaria in 2012. Over a career spanning more than thirty years, he has contributed to over 700 recordings across jazz, pop, electronic music, world music, and film — establishing himself as one of the most versatile percussionists of his generation.
His discography reflects an unusual range of musical worlds: from Colin Towns’ Mask Orchestra (UK) and the NDR Big Band to Austrian pop landmark Rainhard Fendrich, from Kruder & Dorfmeister to the world music album Drums of Compassion with Michael Shrieve — featuring Zakir Hussain, Airto Moreira, and Jack DeJohnette.
Most recently, he contributed to Toda una Vida for Mexican singer-songwriter Carla Morrison, featured in the HBO Max series Como agua para chocolate (Season 2, produced by Salma Hayek).
As a producer, Maass has worked with major labels including Universal and Sony BMG, and received multiple gold and platinum certifications. His production of Georg Danzer’s Persönlich (with Dieter Kolbeck) earned the 2005 Amadeus Award for Best National Pop Production.
His compositions and arrangements have appeared in productions by Universum Film, Formula 1, and Red Bull Media House, as well as theater works directed by Terry Hands, former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Maass is a regular presence at international drum festivals and clinics, including Superdrumming (2003, 2008, 2013), the Meinl Drum Festival (2006, 2008), and the Meinl Percussion Festival (2018). Leading industry publications — drums&percussion, sticks, and idrummag — have featured him in extensive interviews.
Since 2007, he has taught jazz percussion at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz, where he has developed one of the few dedicated percussion programs in the European jazz university landscape. He also gives workshops and masterclasses internationally. From 2021 to 2025, he served as president of Percussion Creativ e.V., Europe’s largest German-language community for drummers and percussionists. In 2024, he was nominated among the Top 5 in the World Percussion category in the Modern Drummer readers poll.
